January 1st, 2015, was the start of a new year, but for the world of contemporary jazz, it was the day that we lost one of our jazz jewels – Jeff Golub. There was something rather remarkable about Jeff; apart from his musical gift on guitar, the ease of his smile, the exuberance of his personality; he had the ability to bring people together from all walks of life. Jeff began his career alongside superstars in the likes of Rod Stewart and Tina Turner before launching a stellar solo career. We all adored Jeff Golub and he will truly be missed.

THE JAZZ IN M.E.E. & SUMMER HORNS IN AUSTIN TX

SUMMER HORNS was an amazing top notch production.  Awesome job recreating the funk sax/horn sections of the 70s with the latest and greatest players.  We loved the diversity of the show, it was very entertaining. Summer Horns was pure energy and incredible horn riffs. One World Theater in Austin will never be the same. This Saxy team included  DAVE KOZ, MINDI ABAIR, RICHARD ELLIOT & GERALD ALBRIGHT. This was the hottest jazz show of the year!  They played tribute to some of the greatest horn sections of all time… EARTH, WIND & FIRE, CHICAGO, JAMES BROWN, STEVIE WONDER, DAVE BRUBECK, TOWER OF POWER AND SLY & THE FAMILY STONE. You have to catch this Summer Horns show in a city near you, its flaming HOT.  To view more pics: https://www.facebook.com/melody.warrenjazz/media_set?set=a.10204752576518068.1073741875.1346973708&type=3

M.E.E. & Sax and the City!

THE JAZZ IN M.E.E. headed to Austin, Tx to cover and experience Sax and the City featuring  Marion Meadows, Jessy J, Paul Taylor  w/ Joe McBride, Will Brock and Pamela Hart hosted by Women in Jazz at the Riverbend Center for the Arts  http://womeninjazz.org/. This show was phenomenal and M.E.E. witnessed one of the best bands ever supporting Marion, Jessy and Paul.! They were all shining STARS!  Jabari Kersey rocked the house of drums, Chip Sherin killed on bass, Joe McBride got down & dirty on keys, and Will Brock caused an up roar from the crowd with his triumphant solo on keys and engaging vocal performance “Come Together”. Pamela Hart’s performance was lyrically beautiful and melodically gracious.

M.E.E. spent some quality with Jessy J and she was delightful in personality and deadly on sax!. As you know, Texans love our southern hospitality and she fit right in with M.E.E. I loved talking with her, and to my surprise her mother hailed from Texas and her dad from Mexico and she joked about being Tex-Mex. She had a pleasant demeanor, was funny and stunning in person. She has an extreme passion for music and slings that sax like no other, all while being stylish and beautiful. Make sure you pick up her new CD Second Chances that was released on Sept 10th.  We have a shopping date planned in Jan on Melrose. We have much more to share with you from our interview with Jessy… Stay tune.http://jessyj.com/

Our friend Marion Meadows was beyond amazing, he took charge of the show and proved that Sax and the City was a stellar top notch jazz show in the industry. We had not seen him since he graced the pages of our April magazine issue, so he did the honors of signing & posing . He is a class act, a true supporter of M.E.E. and a great sax player…He rocked the house musically and verbally with his great hosting  talents.http://www.marionmeadows.com/

Our Paul Taylor experience was INCREDIBLE! He was BLAZIN HOT on stage. we had never seen him perform live before and M.E.E. was in LOVE.  His personality was warm and inviting. If you don’t have his Prime Time CD, run out and get it. He played us a few tunes and we were hooked! His sound was addictive and we loved the vibe of his music. We had a Twitter experience over a year ago and he actually remembered it and that meant alot to M.E.E.https://www.facebook.com/paultaylorsax1

We also had a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee amongst us. Many of you have heard of Chip Shearin. If you haven’t, you’ve lived and felt his presence with his bass playing almost as a part of your every day lives. Be it Television theme songs, Movie scores, Jingles or countless tours with a who’s who in Music. If not those, surely from the iconic bass line for Sugar Hill Gangs, Rappers Delight! The bass line that American Band Stand’s, Dick Clark says …”you may not know the rap but they’re singing the bass line all over the world!”.. Rolling Stone Magazine’s #2 best rap song ever! And the first to chart on billboard and triggering a billion dollar industry. All resting neatly on this iconic bass line!

M.E.E. ON THE RIGHT PATH

There has been a series of confirmations that have occurred in the last couple of weeks, a sort of crescendo effect leading up to this amazing message that says that we are on the right path.  Keiko Matsui has vowed her support http://www.keikomatsui.com/ , Art Sherrod posted ” I’m proud of  M.E.E. and you are creating a legacy” http://www.artsherrodjr.com/, Marcus Anderson posted that “M.E.E. was the future” http://www.marcusanderson.net/,  Matt Marshak says” THE JAZZ IN M.E.E  is an amazing publication! Your coverage of the diverse format of Jazz is superb! The stories, features, and the unbelievable presentation make this publication irresisitible!  http://mattmarshak.com/ . Yesterday this message was sent to us and we would like to share it. These are the type of messages that keep M.E.E going and inspire us to continue to support this national treasure “JAZZ”. We were blown away by the sincerity in the delivery of  Bron’s message to M.E.E. For him to take the time to write such an inspiring and heartfelt message left us speechless. Thank you.

Love You, Jazz, your message and your spirituality in energizing yourself into the music world of Jazz! You are Fantastic! Your synopsis of how you became more entrenched into your destiny of organizing, presenting, and discovering your divine purpose in life was gratifying. As a native from New Orleans, the birthplace of Jazz, I worried about the creators of Jazz going unnoticed and forgotten in a historical perspective by the people who love it most. I to believe that we have inner guides that help us navigate life’s obstacles and I feel that you have what it takes to help pass down the unique and marvelous music of Jazz in all it various forms.

The more I read of how each phase of growth transpired during your jazz exploration and how right it felt; the process, the people you connected with, the feedback, the cause to advocate for, the growth of the company and the decisions you make in research and development for organizational objectives, the more I felt at home in my desire to subscribe to The Jazz In M.E.E. Magazine. And as a Freelance Writer and Jazz enthusiast, I look forward to reading about the projects and events associated with the producers and artists in the Jazz arena. I would also be more than happy to lend my professional freelancing skills to help advocate and submit Jazz articles.

You seem to be very much at home living your passion and fulfilling your new found dreams, and as Rick Warren would say leading a purpose driven life embracing M.E.E.

THE JAZZ IN M.E.E. will interview Jeanette Harris this weekend during her visit to Houston!  We have not hung out with this saxy lady since Jan 2013 @ NAMM in California . Look for her exciting  interview in a future magazine issue.

Jeanette is the scintillating saxtress of smooth jazz. This lady understands that energetic and captivating performances matched with uplifting and inspiring vibrations in the music are the solid platinum recipe for success. Fans already recognize her for her wonderful cover of Stevie Wonder’s “All I Do,” which hit Billboard’s smooth jazz singles chart from her previous album, Saxified. Classically trained in both sax and piano, a graduate of Boston’s famed Berklee College of Music, and the saxophonist for the late, great Teena Marie’s final year of touring, Jeanette has weathered the fiercest challenges to bring the world her own brand of soulful healing vibes. That baptism awaits in her fourth CD, Summer Rain, on which Jeanette had a hand in writing all of the selections except her lovely cover of the Luther Vandross classic “Here and Now.” Its 11 sunny songs wrap the listener in the glow of fun love grooves and sweet romance.

“The music of Summer Rain is all about a positive vibe,” Jeanette states. “It’s about staying in love…never falling out of love, feeling good, being faithful and always following a positive route

Hugh Masekela brings music magic to M.E.E in Texas

THE JAZZ IN M.E.E. Magazine experienced history on June 13, 2013 during Hugh Masekela’s performance at Dosey Doe in the Woodlands. People live a life time and never experience music like we did. Hugh Masekela and Larry Willis delivered a real dose of national treasure… mesmerizing, impassioned, genuine, legendary, emotional and witty. We were  in awe! Joe Sample came out to support Hugh as well.  M.E.E was able to spend time with 3 legends and they were amazingly humble, down to earth and supportive. Hugh Masekela is more than special and  beyond talented. It was only he and Larry Willis on stage and the performance is breathtaking. Full cycle entertainment at its finest. THE JAZZ IN M.E.E Meets: Will Downing & Gerald Albright

THE JAZZ IN M.E.E. had the pleasure of spending the afternoon interviewing and the evening being thoroughly entertained by the powerful saxy sounds of Gerald Albright and the smooth romantic baritone vocals of Will Downing. Avery Sunshine opened the show with her fun, interactive and playful vocals and lyrics coined ‘jazzgosoul’. What a special way to celebrate Mothers day and also raise money for a great cause (1530 Seward Foundation). Donna Franklin hosted this Serious Sounds sponsored event.

Women love Will Downing and men love the women who love Will Downing. In his two-decade recording career, the Brooklyn native has carved for himself a solid career. Will Downing has established himself as one of the most consistent, soulful singers of his era and arguably, with the unfortunate death of Luther Vandross, as today’s leading provider of romantic, soulful music. Downing is known in the contemporary jazz and R&B music genres for his rich baritone vocals, and his interpretations of R&B and pop classics that stretch back to the early 1980s. He was on fire last night and we loved it in Houston.

The crowd could not get enough of Gerald last night. He took us on his a trip with his medley of songs that covered the musical spectrum, jazz, blues and R&B.   Albright had sold over 1,000,000 albums in the U.S. alone. His self-produced music features him on bass guitar, keyboards, flutes, drum programming, and background vocals. Gerald has definitely earned the reputation as the “musician’s musician. With 15 CDs under his belt and one collaboration CD, Albright has definitely gained his place in the music world as a player, songwriter and producer.

Please stay tuned for a recap of the interview that M.E.E had with Gerald in a future magazine issue. He reveals some amazing details about upcoming projects, his approach to music today and how he gives back…

A Hot Jazz Ticket during The NBA All Star Weekend in Houston featuring Marion Meadows, Kyle Turner and Michael Ward

DSC_0016 THE 2013 NBA All Star Weekend Jazzy Day Party hosted by Athens Hotel Ballroom in downtown Houston featuring Marion Meadows, Kyle Turner and Michael Ward. Photos by THE JAZZ IN M.E.E.

The NBA All Star Game landed in Houston this year and the festivities were extravagant and riveting.  This year Jazz secured its place in the mix and it was a hot ticket. THE JAZZ IN M.E.E enjoyed the Jazzy Day Party hosted by the stylish and swanky new Athens Hotel Ballroom in the heart of downtown Houston. We had an awesome time with our jazz family Marion Meadows, Kyle Turner and Michael Ward. They gave star studded memorable performances that we will be everlasting in the hearts of the jazz lovers in attendance. The atmosphere was grown & sexy and the energy was intimate & magical. These three artists individually are remarkable but together they were awe-inspiring.

Marion Meadows has a personality of calm and intrigue and his music mirrors that. As he moved his body in a waving motion to music, we could only focus on the sound coming from the sax which was alluring and hypnotic and even more so that his eyes were masked by his trademark shades. As I watched the crowd, I noticed that they were hanging on to each note passionately as he captivated the them with his smooth jazz-styled soprano sax sound and had them grooving uncontrollably.

Marion Meadows was born in West Virginia and raised primarily in Connecticut; after adopting the classical clarinet at age nine, he moved to the saxophone as a teen, later studying composition and arranging at Boston’s Berklee College of Music. A protégé of Joe Henderson and Eddie Daniels, Meadows later served a long stint as a member of Norman Connors’ Starship Orchestra; after a series of session dates and sideman gigs, he made his solo debut in 1990 with the RCA release For Lovers Only.  Marion Releases his long awaited 13th project “WHISPERS” in March 2013 after a 4 year hiatus.

www.marionmeadows.com

Kyle Turner is the pulse of jazz in Houston and he was very gracious to M.E.E. by shining the spotlight on what our company is doing for jazz nationally and internationally. He hit a musical grand slam with this audience with his soulful and dynamic performance on tenor sax. He jammed the afternoon away and the audience adored every minute.

Kyle Turner is a creative and innovative artist that has warmed the hearts of many with the sultry musical notes birthed from his instrument, the saxophone! A native of Houston Texas, Kyle began his musical journey at a young age. Under the direction of Algernon Jones during his Middle School years and James P Moseley and Alan Beverly during his high school years, Kyle developed the tools necessary to pursue his career in music. With mentors like Arnette Cobb, Conrad Johnson and Kirk Whalum, Kyle’s music took on a more serious note and he quickly established himself as one of the most exciting young talents to grace the city of Houston! In 2011 Kyle released his 5th CD “Wrapped Tight.”

www.kyleturner.net

Micheal Ward’s magnetic display of musical creativity and extreme talent on the violin was the truth! He came out swinging musical punches and the crowd enjoyed it immensely.  He gave us a diverse musical experience on violin and had the crowd eating out of the palm of his hand. He had an infectious sense of humor and enjoyed that he was performing during the afternoon, because it was reminiscence of playing in Louisiana, the state that he calls home.

He began playing music at a very early age, starting with piano playing, and attending band practice with his mother Carol Ward who is a Jazz vocalist. His fondest memories are listening to Clifford Scott “Honky Tonk” on sax and Frank Garrett on organ, and hearing his mom sing all those great jazz standards. Upon entering Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA, Michael decided to become a jazz guitarist because he saw no financial future with the violin. After one week in college his roommate asked if he had ever heard Noel Pointer or Jean luc Ponte. He had not, so his roommate handed him a tape, told him to check it out, and exited the room. After listening to the tapes, he knew immediately this was what he wanted to do. Once again he ended up with his violin.

We had a joyous time covering this event and was truly entertained. I would like to thank Marion, Kyle and Micheal for embracing M.E.E. and everyone for supporting M.E.E. & our new magazine. We would also like to thank Chris Watson, Athens Hotel Ballroom and their staff for welcoming us.  We are grateful and honored by the outpouring of support and encouragement on our journey advocating for jazz.

It’s A Family Thing – CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE & M.E.E.

Grammy Award Winning Bassist extraordinaire Christian McBride February 8, 2013 Wortham Theater in Houston. The Jazz In M.E.E. photo by Vena Creations Grammy Award Winning Bassist Extraordinaire Christian McBride February 8, 2013 Wortham Theater in Houston. The Jazz In M.E.E. photo by vacreations

THE JAZZ IN M.E.E was tipped off about Christian McBride during the Martha’s Vineyard Jazz Festival in August of 2012 by the talented and emerging jazz force Christian Sands christiansandsjazz.com and began to follow him.  We were ecstatic to hear that he was coming to Houston with his band Inside Straight to celebrate 25 years of music with Da Camera chamber of music and jazz. We quickly reached out to the McBride camp to request an interview and they graciously accepted.

On February 8, 2013 we set out to the Wortham Theater in Houston to meet the Grammy Award winning Bassist extraordinaire, composer, arranger, educator, curator and administrator. Christian McBride’s father, Lee Smith, and his great uncle, Howard Cooper, are also well known Philadelphia bassists who served as McBride’s early mentors. Christian McBride, has been one of the most important and most omnipresent figures in the jazz world for 20 years   As a sideman in the jazz world alone, he’s worked with the best of the very best – Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Rollins, J.J. Johnson, Ray Brown, Milt Jackson, McCoy Tyner, Roy Haynes, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Pat Metheny. In the R&B world, he’s not only played with, but also arranged for Isaac Hayes, Chaka Khan, Natalie Cole, Lalah Hathaway, and the one and only Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown. In the pop/rock world, he’s extensively collaborated with Sting, Carly Simon, Don Henley, and Bruce Hornsby. In the hip-hop/neo-soul world, he’s collaborated with the Roots, D’Angelo, and Queen Latifah. In many other specialty projects, he’s worked closely with opera legend Kathleen Battle, bass virtuoso Edgar Meyer, the Shanghai Quartet and the Sonus Quartet.

He invited us into his musical territory with open arms and allowed us to engage him and the band during rehearsal and sound check in their ambiance. We had fun with them and enjoyed our creative freedom.  We positioned and repositioned our signage around him to get the perfect picture and he rolled with the punches. Even joked by asking “Do you carry that sign everywhere”?  My answer was, yes…It’s our trademark, and he chuckled.  As he read through the magazine, he asked “I’m I going to be in this magazine”?  I said, yes you are. “Wow!!! It is awesome” he replied.  “I love what you are doing for jazz.” I felt very proud and grateful by his compliment and confidence in M.E.E.

We experienced quite a bit about him hanging with him for the day. His personality was magnetic, he loved to laugh, his smile brightened the room and everyone enjoyed being in his presence. He is mega talented, but very humble. His view of jazz and how to attract new fans was eclectic and he adored the mystery of not knowing where jazz was headed in the future. He would rather bask in the moment. He also believed that a key element in being a successful bass player is taking on a supportive role. “We are the brick layers” and we have to support the entire band he implied.   Meeting him was like family; he wanted to show us the life of jazz from his eyes. He gave us an up-close and personal view of high & heavy art verbally and musically. He revealed insight regarding his fascination with big band writers, arranging and scoop on his upcoming book. He shared great details with us, and vowed to have our back in jazz and at one point he had a M.E.E. t-shirt on his chest, a magazine in his hand all under the M.E.E. sign, taking photos vowing his support. It was hilarious. He has a great story to share and we cannot wait to share it with you in a future JAZZ IN M.E.E. issue. Our journey continues to get better.

After the interview he prepared for his performance with his fabulous band members; saxophonist Steve Wilson, vibraphonist Warren Wolf, pianist Peter Martin and drummer Carl Allen.  These guys put on a dynamic show, and Christian got down to busy making the bass do things I had never witnessed. His performance was breath taking. I found myself holding my breath at times to endure the beauty of the it.  They charmed us with “Theme for Kareem” (Freddie Hubbard),”Sophisticated Lady” (Duke Ellington),”Stick & Move” (McBride) and “Brother Mister (excerpt)” (McBride).

This talented Grammy Award winner was incredible! Christian, his management team, his band and the venue treated M.E.E. like “Royalty”. They were totally open, gracious and supportive.  We appreciate and value what Christian McBride has and will continue to contribute to the jazz journey. Look for more about this charismatic artist from M.E.E. soon.

Destined to Connect with M.E.E.- Keiko Matsui

First I must tell you that the hands of fate were truly at work. I missed Keiko Matsui’s Houston performance in February, but this time I believe we were destined to meet. My schedule was completely booked until a few days before Keiko’s arrival. Then miraculously my schedule was cleared and I was led to her performance announcement.

I’ve never felt anything like I experienced listening to Keiko’s music. Her music is like a spiritual light beckoning for you to come in and find solace from the world. It was a call of rejuvenation, a musical prayer that made my inner spirit swell. I felt compelled to reach out to her team. I thought that it might be a long shot to confirm an interview on such short notice, but her team quickly responded to M.E.E. and the stars were aligned for our notable introduction.

On October 6, 2012, Keiko landed in the Lone Star State to promote her new project – The Road…, released in January 2011 by Shanachie Entertainment. The Road…, is Keiko’s long awaited, self produced, 22nd album released in the US.  It is also Keiko Matsui’s first new recording in four years and a follow-up to her acclaimed 2007 South African inspired release entitled Moyo, which featured Hugh Masakela among other amazing artists.
The Road…, is a riveting collection of timeless, passionate, cathartic, emotional and exotic melodies with lush harmonies and global rhythms.

The sense of peace and harmony that I experienced from her music translated into our meeting. Keiko was absolutely divine! I felt an overwhelming sense of calmness while spending time getting to know her. She has a very open and welcoming demeanor and it felt as if we had met before. I was so comfortable with her that I forgot it was an interview; we talked as though we were long time friends.

Keiko’s no borders ideology to music poured out of her personality. “Music has no borders and it creates a oneness among people,” confided the Japanese born pianist, composer and producer. Now I understand why her unique melting pot of musical influences have garnered her a devout international following.

We touched on many topics; her beautiful daughters, work and life balance, how music saved her life, her musical influences, the transition into music from Japan and what her fans mean to her.
Keiko has a bubbly sense of humor and was ecstatic about experiencing a Texas BBQ with Joe Sample, who told her to give him a call whenever she was in Houston. Keiko took him up on his offer and Joe Sample invited her over to his house for a Texas style BBQ, and she had a blast!

That night following our meeting, Keiko performed to a thunderous crowd at one of Houston’s best-kept secrets Dosey Doe, located in the Woodlands.  She put on the ultimate show! She took control of that stage and delivered a 90 min non-stop entertaining and truly unique experience. Keiko is a phenomenal jazz player, and her music has such strong classical, world and new age influences that the result is truly unparalleled.  She was joined by the killer musical talents of Jackiem Joyner on sax, Eric Baines on bass, Blake Aaron on guitar and Steve Hass on drums. This band shook the building!

The Keiko experience is a must! I have much more to reveal about this harmonious spirit, in an upcoming issue of In The Jazzy Limelight. I went to meet Keiko for an interview, but left with enlightenment.  Keiko’s star is pretty bright in the industry, and yet, she extended her hand to M.E.E. in support of our endeavors and I was moved by this beautiful gesture.

The staff & management team at Dosey Doe rolled out the red carpet for M.E.E. and were gracious hosts to all their guests. I applaud them for their hospitality and professionalism. Dosey Doe is one of the most well respected listening rooms in the country featuring nationally recognized artists from contemporary to country, jazz to bluegrass, and everything in between. The 165-year-old historical structure has been saved for its current purpose.  Originally built as a tobacco barn in Kentucky the 300-600 year old growth oak & birch massive beams are the foundation not only for a beautiful room but also for the great acoustics.  It is a place where memories are made. No need to run from restaurant to music hall at Dosey Doe’s you have it all.  http://www.doseydoescoffeeshop.com/

Eric Darius = a full circle approach of success in the jazz industry with out skipping a beat!

Talk about feeling special…. I reached out to the Eric Darius camp to set up the interview and of course I was expecting his management team to call, but one evening about 6pm I received a call from an unrecognized number, which I answered.  “May I speak to Melody Warren” This is she…. This is Eric Darius…. you could hear crickets for a minute, but I quickly answered…”Heyyyyy”!!!!! And the rest is history! A jazz bond was formed with “MEE”.

With my gear in hand and sporting my fan club T-shirt I was out of the door! No, it was not Santa Clause coming to town it was Eric Darius, but I was just as excited to meet the electrifying saxophonist that pulls at your heart strings with the emotional vibe in his slow ballads and jolts you with his powerful melodic vibration with his fast grooves.  He agreed to meet with THE JAZZ IN M.E.E. after rehearsal for his show that was scheduled for 8pm on June 16, 2012 at the Red Cat Jazz Cafe. He rarely comes to the south but when he does he sells out the show. His last visit to Houston was October 2011, where he teased us with only a few songs.  I was more than ready to experience his dynamic and exhilarating live show. I have always been a fan of Eric Darius; he showcases a full circle approach of success in the jazz industry with out skipping a beat. His image, marketing, performance, fan interaction, showmanship is vividly outstanding. He’s like a magnet and draws support and fans globally. This much in demand sax-mans’ worldwide performances include Japan, Indonesia, London, France, Italy, among numerous other countries.

To sign up for his FAN CLUB visit:  http://www.ericdarius.com/.

Playfulness and laughter was heard from rehearsal as I entered the Red Cat Jazz Cafe. I thought it was quite gracious of him to meet with “MEE” even though he had only 3 hours of sleep the night before. He joked with the band showing his lighthearted side, but there was no doubt about him being completely serious about his musical expectations for his show. He rehearses just like he was playing a concert, with the same energy level and power – he is dynamic. I was in awe!!!

I was a bit nervous for the band as I sat there, even though they were the utmost professionals and thoroughly prepared you could feel the unspoken pressure and supreme level of the bar being raised.  As I set up for the interview I could not get Eric’s sax sound out of my head. Eric definitely talks through that sax!………….and you know what? I understood every word. Tonight’s show was going to be memorable!

Ok rehearsal is finished now and he is walking over. Wow he is in shape!.. Stay tuned for what he had to share with “MEE” and the recap on his Houston show at the Red Cat Jazz Cafe in his upcoming Jazzy Limelight Feature!

Keep track of Eric! http://www.ericdarius.com/

Past + Future + Fusion = Jeff Lorber “Galaxy”

On May 19, 2012 I had the opportunity to spend the morning interviewing and the evening being thoroughly entertained by the spectacular Grammy nominated jazz legend, keyboardist, composer, producer Jeff Lorber. He is well recognized for the cutting edge movement known as jazz fusion – a marriage of traditional jazz with elements of rock, R&B, funk and other electrified sounds. I was truly impressed with him and his musical gift, which he discovered at the early age of 4. He had not played in Houston since 1982, so this was a real treat for me and the many fans that have awaited his return to the Lone Star State.

The Grammy nominated Jeff Lorber played 2 packed shows at Red Cat Jazz Cafe with some incredible musicians backing him up…Musical Director- Vernon Barbary on bass, Patrick Williams on drums, Kelly Dean on saxophones and John Calderon on guitar. I sat mesmerized at the musical flamboyancy that came from the stage, by the man that seemed very low key and conservative during our interview earlier that day. He took the audience on a musical tour of his new CD Galaxy that was released January 31, 2012, on Heads Up International, a division of Concord Music Group. On this CD he revisits a sound he helped pioneer. Galaxy features Lorber on keyboards, Jimmy Haslip on bass, and Eric Marienthal on saxophones, along with guitarist Paul Jackson Jr. and Larry Koonse, drummers Vinnie Colaiuta and Dave Weckl, percussionist Lenny Castro and trumpeter Randy Brecker.

I have a love of discovery in the moment, so I tend not to over research an artist before interviewing them to actually be surprised by the stories they tell and the questions they answer. I was truly surprised to find out many interesting things about Jeff’s musical journey, but to learn that hip hop stars Notorious Big and Lil’ Kim sampled Jeff’s song “Rain Dance “from his Grammy Nominated CD “Now Is The Time “which became a huge hit for Notorious Big known as “Crush on You” was a revelation. During his show he played the song and people gasped because they thought Jeff Lorber knows Notorious BIG, but in actuality it was vice-versa! Notorious BIG had the pleasure of knowing Jeff Lorber! If you would like to experience a similar Hip Hop vibe from Jeff Lorber the track “Big Brother “on his Galaxy CD moves into hip hop territory, similar to Jeff’s grooving “Rain Dance”.

Jeff and I had a conversation about musical influences and Thelonious Monk was one that he mentioned to be instrumental. I knew that Jeff danced to the beat of his own drum and created music that he wanted, but it was not until after the fact that I ran into this quote. “I say, play your own way. Don’t play what the public wants. You play what you want and let the public pick up on what you’re doing. Even if it does take them fifteen, twenty years”. Thelonious Monk~ This holds true because it has taken me 15 years to discover Jeff’s ties into the hip hop arena!

I have much more to reveal about the legendary Jeff Lorber, but you will have to wait for the upcoming release of the Inside M.E.E. Jazzy Limelight issue.
