DAVE KOZ ~ IN HOUSTON~THE JAZZ IN M.E.E. MAGAZINE

Nine-time GRAMMY nominee DAVE KOZ performed at the Wortham Center with trumpet extraordinaire RICK BRAUN and silky vocalist KENNY LATTIMORE August 29, 2015.

It had been a while since Dave Koz has played in Houston, but it was well worth the wait. He brought out all of the die hard jazz enthusiasts. He is a gifted professional and brings out the best in everyone that shares the stage with him and his audience. Hanging out and being entertained by Dave Koz, Kenny Lattimore and Rick Braunn proved to be a magical night of music for The Jazz in MEE Magazine.

Over the decades, the saxophone has opened numerous doors for Koz. He has blended his talents with the likes of Ray Charles, Michael McDonald, Rod Stewart and a host of others earning him a spot among the elite in the genre of contemporary jazz. Rick Braun got his start playing with bands including Boney James & Jeff Golub’s Avenue Blue. A trumpet sensation, Braun continues to dazzle the smooth jazz masses. The package tops off with the penetrating vocals of Kenny Lattimore.

Lago Maggiore Smooth Jazz Festival in Italy!

Ciao Smooth Jazz-Lovers all over the world! Are you ready to jet set to another incredible destination in the name of JAZZ?  Pack your bags!

THE JAZZ IN M.E.E. Magazine partners with Smooth Entertainment to introduce the Lago Maggiore Jazz Festival in Italy!

The Smooth Entertainment festival family has grown again. In the new year,  the altogether 13th edition of our SMOOTH JAZZ FESTIVAL series takes us to a new place in a new country – a country known for good food, good wine, fashion, summer, sun, sunshine – a country known for LA DOLCE VITA: Italy.

The 3rd in the league of their annual festivals is from now on going to take place there, more precisely at the picturesque Lake Maggiore. The second largest lake in Italy is located in the wine region of Piemonte and is just within a stone’s throw of Lake Como, where for example George Clooney owns a house. Venue for our festival is the Grand Hotel Dino in Baveno. The exclusive bathing and holiday resort Baveno, which is situated about 45 minutes north of the fashion metropolis Milan, is surrounded by picturesque mountains. It has retained the glamour of the 60s andthe charm of Art Nouveau. The hotel itself is nestled in a beautiful natural setting with century-old trees in the parks, pools, and the breathtaking panorama of the Borromean Islands. The spacious complex extends directly to the lake shore and has a private boat jetty.

On the Smooth Entertainment stage, they welcome some of the biggest and  most  successful international stars of the Contemporary and Smooth Jazz scene.  Check out the lineup for 2015 and book your reservations today!

THE JAZZ IN M.E.E. & THE AUSTIN JAZZ FESTIVAL

THE JAZZ IN M.E.E Magazine spent the Memorial Day weekend with our Austin Jazz Festival Family!http://thejazzinmee.com/ David McLorren http://www.davidmclorren.com/ and M.E.E. joined forces in covering/ capturing amazing memories of this high energy and interactive festival.

Austin’s next great music festival – Austin Jazz Festival was held May 25, 2014 at The Backyard feat Kirk Whalum! | austinjazzfest.com

Austin proudly hangs it’s collective hat on being the Live Music Capital of the World® – with several music festivals to match.

One noticeable missing genre exception- JAZZ. Austin Jazz Festival is designed to fill that void. Jazz is a uniquely cultural phenomenon that unites people across the divides of race, age, nationality and socio-economic status.

The 2014 festival featured international jazz master Kirk Whalum, Jazz Funk Soul with Jeff Lorber and Everette Harp, saxophonist Kyle Turner, Jessy J and flautist Althea René. It was incredible and next year find your way to AUSTIN TX for this amazing festival.

M.E.E. & Sax and the City!

THE JAZZ IN M.E.E. headed to Austin, Tx to cover and experience Sax and the City featuring  Marion Meadows, Jessy J, Paul Taylor  w/ Joe McBride, Will Brock and Pamela Hart hosted by Women in Jazz at the Riverbend Center for the Arts  http://womeninjazz.org/. This show was phenomenal and M.E.E. witnessed one of the best bands ever supporting Marion, Jessy and Paul.! They were all shining STARS!  Jabari Kersey rocked the house of drums, Chip Sherin killed on bass, Joe McBride got down & dirty on keys, and Will Brock caused an up roar from the crowd with his triumphant solo on keys and engaging vocal performance “Come Together”. Pamela Hart’s performance was lyrically beautiful and melodically gracious.

M.E.E. spent some quality with Jessy J and she was delightful in personality and deadly on sax!. As you know, Texans love our southern hospitality and she fit right in with M.E.E. I loved talking with her, and to my surprise her mother hailed from Texas and her dad from Mexico and she joked about being Tex-Mex. She had a pleasant demeanor, was funny and stunning in person. She has an extreme passion for music and slings that sax like no other, all while being stylish and beautiful. Make sure you pick up her new CD Second Chances that was released on Sept 10th.  We have a shopping date planned in Jan on Melrose. We have much more to share with you from our interview with Jessy… Stay tune.http://jessyj.com/

Our friend Marion Meadows was beyond amazing, he took charge of the show and proved that Sax and the City was a stellar top notch jazz show in the industry. We had not seen him since he graced the pages of our April magazine issue, so he did the honors of signing & posing . He is a class act, a true supporter of M.E.E. and a great sax player…He rocked the house musically and verbally with his great hosting  talents.http://www.marionmeadows.com/

Our Paul Taylor experience was INCREDIBLE! He was BLAZIN HOT on stage. we had never seen him perform live before and M.E.E. was in LOVE.  His personality was warm and inviting. If you don’t have his Prime Time CD, run out and get it. He played us a few tunes and we were hooked! His sound was addictive and we loved the vibe of his music. We had a Twitter experience over a year ago and he actually remembered it and that meant alot to M.E.E.https://www.facebook.com/paultaylorsax1

We also had a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee amongst us. Many of you have heard of Chip Shearin. If you haven’t, you’ve lived and felt his presence with his bass playing almost as a part of your every day lives. Be it Television theme songs, Movie scores, Jingles or countless tours with a who’s who in Music. If not those, surely from the iconic bass line for Sugar Hill Gangs, Rappers Delight! The bass line that American Band Stand’s, Dick Clark says …”you may not know the rap but they’re singing the bass line all over the world!”.. Rolling Stone Magazine’s #2 best rap song ever! And the first to chart on billboard and triggering a billion dollar industry. All resting neatly on this iconic bass line!

M.E.E. ON THE RIGHT PATH

There has been a series of confirmations that have occurred in the last couple of weeks, a sort of crescendo effect leading up to this amazing message that says that we are on the right path.  Keiko Matsui has vowed her support http://www.keikomatsui.com/ , Art Sherrod posted ” I’m proud of  M.E.E. and you are creating a legacy” http://www.artsherrodjr.com/, Marcus Anderson posted that “M.E.E. was the future” http://www.marcusanderson.net/,  Matt Marshak says” THE JAZZ IN M.E.E  is an amazing publication! Your coverage of the diverse format of Jazz is superb! The stories, features, and the unbelievable presentation make this publication irresisitible!  http://mattmarshak.com/ . Yesterday this message was sent to us and we would like to share it. These are the type of messages that keep M.E.E going and inspire us to continue to support this national treasure “JAZZ”. We were blown away by the sincerity in the delivery of  Bron’s message to M.E.E. For him to take the time to write such an inspiring and heartfelt message left us speechless. Thank you.

Love You, Jazz, your message and your spirituality in energizing yourself into the music world of Jazz! You are Fantastic! Your synopsis of how you became more entrenched into your destiny of organizing, presenting, and discovering your divine purpose in life was gratifying. As a native from New Orleans, the birthplace of Jazz, I worried about the creators of Jazz going unnoticed and forgotten in a historical perspective by the people who love it most. I to believe that we have inner guides that help us navigate life’s obstacles and I feel that you have what it takes to help pass down the unique and marvelous music of Jazz in all it various forms.

The more I read of how each phase of growth transpired during your jazz exploration and how right it felt; the process, the people you connected with, the feedback, the cause to advocate for, the growth of the company and the decisions you make in research and development for organizational objectives, the more I felt at home in my desire to subscribe to The Jazz In M.E.E. Magazine. And as a Freelance Writer and Jazz enthusiast, I look forward to reading about the projects and events associated with the producers and artists in the Jazz arena. I would also be more than happy to lend my professional freelancing skills to help advocate and submit Jazz articles.

You seem to be very much at home living your passion and fulfilling your new found dreams, and as Rick Warren would say leading a purpose driven life embracing M.E.E.

THE JAZZ IN M.E.E. to interview Joe Sample

THE JAZZ IN M.E.E. is excited to announce that  we will interview the legendary Joe Sample!  We finally had the opportunity to meet last week  at  Hugh Masekela concert @ Dosey Doe. He and his wife Yolanda are devine.  Joe Sample resides in Houston, but keeps a busy travel scheudle. Please look for this priceless interview in an upcoming  issue of our magazine.

For more than four decades, pianist and composer Joe Sample has been an integral, innovative and bestselling part of jazz history. He is a founding member of the influential jazz funk combo The Crusaders (originally the Jazz Crusaders) and a pioneer of contemporary jazz piano.  Sample began playing the piano when he was five years old. Since the early 1980s, he has enjoyed a successful solo career and has guested on many recordings by other performers and groups, including Miles Davis, George Benson, Jimmy Witherspoon, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Steely Dan and The Supremes. Sample incorporates jazz, gospel, blues, Latin, and classical forms into his music.

THE JAZZ IN M.E.E. to interview Jeanette Harris

THE JAZZ IN M.E.E. will interview Jeanette Harris this weekend during her visit to Houston!  We have not hung out with this saxy lady since Jan 2013 @ NAMM in California . Look for her exciting  interview in a future magazine issue.

Jeanette is the scintillating saxtress of smooth jazz. This lady understands that energetic and captivating performances matched with uplifting and inspiring vibrations in the music are the solid platinum recipe for success. Fans already recognize her for her wonderful cover of Stevie Wonder’s “All I Do,” which hit Billboard’s smooth jazz singles chart from her previous album, Saxified. Classically trained in both sax and piano, a graduate of Boston’s famed Berklee College of Music, and the saxophonist for the late, great Teena Marie’s final year of touring, Jeanette has weathered the fiercest challenges to bring the world her own brand of soulful healing vibes. That baptism awaits in her fourth CD, Summer Rain, on which Jeanette had a hand in writing all of the selections except her lovely cover of the Luther Vandross classic “Here and Now.” Its 11 sunny songs wrap the listener in the glow of fun love grooves and sweet romance.

“The music of Summer Rain is all about a positive vibe,” Jeanette states. “It’s about staying in love…never falling out of love, feeling good, being faithful and always following a positive route

THE JAZZ IN M.E.E. just listened to ”A Guy Named Joe Leavy”

THE JAZZ IN M.E.E. just listened to ”A Guy Named Joe Leavy” CD project by singer/songwriter/producer Joe Leavy and I must say Love is where we live! Joe this CD is amazing, passionate and heartfelt. Your storytelling and smooth vocals were addictive. This project embodied a true musical definition of Joe Leavy brother, son, father, husband, and friend. I truly felt your romanticism, high regard for love and your devotion to music. “Skin in The Game” was incredible, the sentiment and zeal of your delivery in this song was breathtaking. ”I Heart You” and “My little One” captured the essence of LOVE! Uplifting and redeeming is an understatement! Mission accomplished Joe, this music will resonate in the hearts and minds of people forever. Magnificent job!

Hugh Masekela brings music magic to M.E.E in Texas

THE JAZZ IN M.E.E. Magazine experienced history on June 13, 2013 during Hugh Masekela’s performance at Dosey Doe in the Woodlands. People live a life time and never experience music like we did. Hugh Masekela and Larry Willis delivered a real dose of national treasure… mesmerizing, impassioned, genuine, legendary, emotional and witty. We were  in awe! Joe Sample came out to support Hugh as well.  M.E.E was able to spend time with 3 legends and they were amazingly humble, down to earth and supportive. Hugh Masekela Interviews with M.E.E.

Hugh Masekela the world-renowned flugelhornist, trumpeter, bandleader, composer and singer will interview with THE JAZZ IN M.E.E. Magazine tomorrow. His voice remains deeply connected at home, while his international career sparkles is coming to Houston/Woodlands Texas. He will be performing @ Dosey Doe – The Big Barn @ 8:30pm Thursday June 13,2013.

He was born in the town of  Witbank, South Africa in 1939. He has covered the globe & played with just about every top star youcan think of. His international hits have sold several million CDs. His GRAZING IN THE GRASS earned him a GRAMMY. BRING HIM BACK HOME became the anthem for Nelson Mandela’s world tour after his release from prison. His recent albums – all platinum. Larry Willis may be best known for being the keyboardist for Blood Sweat & Tears; in the industry he is recognized as a master jazz pianist & composer. http://www.doseydoe.com/
http://www.hughmasekela.co.za/

Masekela began to hone his, now signature, Afro-Jazz sound in the late 1950s during a period of intense creative collaboration, most notably performing in the 1959 musical King Kong, written by Todd Matshikiza, and, soon thereafter, as a member of the now legendary South African group, the Jazz Epistles (featuring the classic line up of Kippie Moeketsi, Abdullah Ibrahim and Jonas Gwangwa).

April is Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM) Let’s Celebrate!

April is Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM)
Let’s Celebrate!

JAM2013_poster_90

The Spirit and Rhythms of Jazz is the 2013 Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM) theme highlighting jazz cultural history, musical performance and stories, programs and productions this April. JAM and UNESCO’s International Jazz Day April 30 provide rich platforms for individuals and communities to explore jazz principles of freedom, inclusion and creativity to learn how jazz has transformed America and inspired the world. The Smithsonian will present stories, images, and music highlighting various jazz artists and people who helped shape America’s original art form – jazz – over several decades; three jazz legends to be featured are: Lionel Hampton, Randy Weston and John Levy.

THE SPIRIT AND RHYTHMS OF JAZZ

Lionel Hampton’s Smithsonian story has an unmistakable vibe. His image on the 2013 JAM poster is created from artwork by Frederick J. Brown on permanent display at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. A set of vibes Hampton donated to the Smithsonian jazz collection in 2001 will be played at special jazz events.

Featuring outstanding sidemen and soloists, as well as his own swinging vibe playing, Lionel Hampton’s bands during the 1940s and 1950s were among the most popular and most exciting in jazz. Hampton was raised in the Midwest, primarily in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where he received his first musical training. His career began behind the drums; his first music job was in a newsboys’ band sponsored by the Chicago Defender.

This portrait of Lionel Hampton was created in 1997 by the late Frederick J. Brown, an African American artist whose passion for jazz, blues and American culture provided the artistic inspiration for his work. Brown presented this portrait to Hampton at an 89th birthday party held at Brown’s loft in New York City.

Born February 6, 1945 in Greensboro, GA., Brown grew up on the south side of Chicago. He was a largely self-taught artist, who earned a degree in art and psychology from Southern Illinois University. Brown was influenced by the German Expressionists and Abstract Expressionists like Willem de Kooning, who was a mentor.

Lionel Hampton Bio:http://www.nea.gov/honors/jazz/jmCMS/master.php?id=1988_02&type=bio

Randy Weston is renowned for illuminating linkages between African rhythms and jazz. His perspective is embodied in works like his Uhuru Afrika, collaborations with Gnaoua musicians of Morocco, and his promotion of the legacy of James Reese Europe. Weston will join the Smithsonian in presenting a concert and onstage discussion to showcase this history.

John Levy was a successful African American jazz business manager during a period of American history when few black men commanded respect and fair business dealings for themselves, much less others. Levy delivered both, managing artists from jazz vocalist Nancy Wilson (who remained a client until Levy’s death)to British pianist George Shearing, among others, with integrity and keen business acumen on the strength of his handshake and courage.

John Clayton teams up with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra to deliver a webcast performance of original music in tribute to John Levy, the jazz bassist turned business manager, to highlight the Smithsonian’s celebration of International Jazz Day.

Lt. Col. Alexander Jefferson - Tuskegee Red Tail Pilot
Born  Nov. 15, 1921 in Detroit, Mich., Jefferson was the eldest child of Alexander Jefferson and Jane White Jefferson. His maternal great-grandfather William Jefferson White was born to a slave woman and a white slave owner in the 1830s. Jefferson’s grandfather became a minister, and in 1867 he opened an all-black ministry school for boys in Augusta, Ga., which today is known as Morehouse College.

The Tuskegee Airmen, the popular name of a group of African American pilots who fought during World War II, were the first black military aviators to serve in the United States armed forces. Jefferson’s book “Red Tail Captured, Red Tail Free” is a personal memoir about black soldiers who served their country during and after World War II. Lt. Col. Alexander Jefferson is an American treasure, and we’re proud to have him join us to share his experiences.

Jefferson was shot down on August 12, 1944, while attacking a radar installation during his 18th mission over Toulon in southern France. Parachuting to safety and landing in a forest, he was immediately captured by German ground troops. He was sent to a German prisoner of war (POW) camp in Poland called Stalag Luft III, a specialist Luftwaffe-run camp for captured Allied Air Force personnel. He was then moved to Stalag VII-A, just outside Dachau. After the Russian Army entered Poland, the Germans marched the prisoners to Munich, where they were freed by Gen. George Patton’s U.S. Third Army. Jefferson returned to the United States on board the Cunard liner RMS Queen Mary, arriving in New York City in mid-1945

During World War II, African American citizens in many U.S. states still were subject to racist Jim Crow laws. The American military was racially segregated, as was much of the federal government. The Tuskegee Airmen experienced racial discrimination, both within and outside the U.S. Army. Despite these adversities, they trained and flew with distinction. Although the 477th Bombardment Group “worked up” on North American B-25 Mitchell bombers, they never served in combat. The Tuskegee 332nd Fighter Group was the only actual operational unit. First sent overseas as part of Operation Torch, they were put into action in Sicily and Italy before being deployed as bomber escorts in Europe, where they were particularly successful in their missions.

In 1995, Jefferson was enshrined in the Michigan Aviation Hall of Fame. In 2004, Jefferson was awarded with a Purple Heart for being wounded while being shot down over Nazi occupied France. On March 29, 2007, Jefferson attended a ceremony in the U.S. Capitol rotunda, where he and the other surviving veterans of the Tuskegee Airmen and the widows of airmen no longer with us were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in recognition of their service.

Kirk Whalum and Jonathan Butler

THE JAZZ IN M.E.E.  had the opportunity to  witness the impressive show of Kirk Whalum and Jonathan Butler April 29. 2012 at the Arena Theater. It was love at first note!!!!  I fell in love with this duo! Jonathan took the stage like a storm in Houston and was amazing. His performance was buoyant  and inspiring. He was equally pleasing in person with his incredible personality.

Wow!!! We have found our South African jewel!  Jonathan performed with a broken foot and offered to take off his boot so that he could get down on his knees to give us the full performance. What a gentleman and champion!

Kirk Whalum, the sax phenom is an amazing talent. He had the Houston crowd buzzing the entire night. He has a special connection with Houston and put on a down home delightful show. THE JAZZ IN MEE was impressed!

Follow this duo!

Eric Darius = a full circle approach of success in the jazz industry with out skipping a beat!

Talk about feeling special…. I reached out to the Eric Darius camp to set up the interview and of course I was expecting his management team to call, but one evening about 6pm I received a call from an unrecognized number, which I answered.  “May I speak to Melody Warren” This is she…. This is Eric Darius…. you could hear crickets for a minute, but I quickly answered…”Heyyyyy”!!!!! And the rest is history! A jazz bond was formed with “MEE”.

With my gear in hand and sporting my fan club T-shirt I was out of the door! No, it was not Santa Clause coming to town it was Eric Darius, but I was just as excited to meet the electrifying saxophonist that pulls at your heart strings with the emotional vibe in his slow ballads and jolts you with his powerful melodic vibration with his fast grooves.  He agreed to meet with THE JAZZ IN M.E.E. after rehearsal for his show that was scheduled for 8pm on June 16, 2012 at the Red Cat Jazz Cafe. He rarely comes to the south but when he does he sells out the show. His last visit to Houston was October 2011, where he teased us with only a few songs.  I was more than ready to experience his dynamic and exhilarating live show. I have always been a fan of Eric Darius; he showcases a full circle approach of success in the jazz industry with out skipping a beat. His image, marketing, performance, fan interaction, showmanship is vividly outstanding. He’s like a magnet and draws support and fans globally. This much in demand sax-mans’ worldwide performances include Japan, Indonesia, London, France, Italy, among numerous other countries.

To sign up for his FAN CLUB visit:  http://www.ericdarius.com/.

Playfulness and laughter was heard from rehearsal as I entered the Red Cat Jazz Cafe. I thought it was quite gracious of him to meet with “MEE” even though he had only 3 hours of sleep the night before. He joked with the band showing his lighthearted side, but there was no doubt about him being completely serious about his musical expectations for his show. He rehearses just like he was playing a concert, with the same energy level and power – he is dynamic. I was in awe!!!

I was a bit nervous for the band as I sat there, even though they were the utmost professionals and thoroughly prepared you could feel the unspoken pressure and supreme level of the bar being raised.  As I set up for the interview I could not get Eric’s sax sound out of my head. Eric definitely talks through that sax!………….and you know what? I understood every word. Tonight’s show was going to be memorable!

Ok rehearsal is finished now and he is walking over. Wow he is in shape!.. Stay tuned for what he had to share with “MEE” and the recap on his Houston show at the Red Cat Jazz Cafe in his upcoming Jazzy Limelight Feature!

Keep track of Eric! http://www.ericdarius.com/

2nd Annual Chocolate Summer Night

We held our 2nd Annual Chocolate Summer Night event on Saturday, June 23, 2012 and here are some of the moments captured during this breathtaking event!

Chocolate Summer Night delivered an exciting poetic and musical experience that had everyone captivated. This classy upscale cast of Artists offered many facets of entertainment and fulfillment on various levels. Their performances left everyone wanting more!  “When is the next one?” Everyone wanted to know…..

If you are asking yourself…. What is a Chocolate Summer Night? Chocolate Summer Night is an amazing array of artistic talent, music, poetry, and entertainment, wrapped with love = “chocolate” inspiration, motivation, and sophistication and style. This event is an extension of a very “impactful & powerful moment in time” —by Houston’s own-Melody Warren, CEO Multifaceted Exquisite Events Inc./ THE JAZZ IN M.E.E the orchestrator of this special event.

Melody was inspired to create this annual event after experiencing a Hank Stewart performance during a trip to Atlanta in 2009. “Amazing was an understatement! “All I could think about was sharing him with Houston.” Hank Stewart the Emmy Award Winning Poet, and sensual orator, the motivational speaker, the inspirational poet, the author, the activist, the founder and president of the Stewart Foundation (a youth leadership org.) and the founder of Five Men on a Stool left an everlasting impression that had to be shared. Once you experience this event you will understand WHY!

Thanks for supporting “MEE” with our vision, mission and events. We appreciate and value your support!

The Jazz In M.E.E. Meets Warren Hill

Warren Hill swooped down on Houston Saturday, April 21, 2012 and had me at HELLO! My experience with him and his music was nothing less than magnificent! ALL ENCOMPASSING….. Comes to mind for me when describing him. He delivered an exceptional performance on sax and had the crowd on their feet! The master on the drums that night was none other than Houston’s own Patrick Williams! He took the show to another level! Warren was incredible and Patrick was a special addition and he killed it! Warren could not acknowledge Patrick enough for his show stopping drum performance! Patrick represented Houston well! Way to go Patrick!!!I love artists that share the spotlight!  Warren is talented, funny and generous. Wow!!  Warren treated the Houston audience like family with his warm personality and he is the complete musical package. I met him briefly before the show and after the show I was impressed that he remembered my name (first and last). I guess Warrens are just special!

The JAZZ IN M.E.E. blends the extraordinary talent of Houston artists with incredible artists from around the world. We constantly search for unique and dynamic jazz artists. It was in the process of an intensive social networking talent search campaign I clicked upon a smile, a sax, a hat and a star quality that radiated from my screen. The photograph included 3 saxophonists, but this particular saxophonist was paramount! I had not heard one note from this artist but his presence demanded my attention and intrigued me enough to find out more. This shimmer of light was none other than Barbados born, world renowned, Berklee College of Music educated, Billboard Smooth Jazz chart topping Saxophonist – Elan Trotman! I’m aware it’s a mouthful, but he was just that astonishing.

Past + Future + Fusion = Jeff Lorber “Galaxy”

On May 19, 2012 I had the opportunity to spend the morning interviewing and the evening being thoroughly entertained by the spectacular Grammy nominated jazz legend, keyboardist, composer, producer Jeff Lorber. He is well recognized for the cutting edge movement known as jazz fusion – a marriage of traditional jazz with elements of rock, R&B, funk and other electrified sounds. I was truly impressed with him and his musical gift, which he discovered at the early age of 4. He had not played in Houston since 1982, so this was a real treat for me and the many fans that have awaited his return to the Lone Star State.

The Grammy nominated Jeff Lorber played 2 packed shows at Red Cat Jazz Cafe with some incredible musicians backing him up…Musical Director- Vernon Barbary on bass, Patrick Williams on drums, Kelly Dean on saxophones and John Calderon on guitar. I sat mesmerized at the musical flamboyancy that came from the stage, by the man that seemed very low key and conservative during our interview earlier that day. He took the audience on a musical tour of his new CD Galaxy that was released January 31, 2012, on Heads Up International, a division of Concord Music Group. On this CD he revisits a sound he helped pioneer. Galaxy features Lorber on keyboards, Jimmy Haslip on bass, and Eric Marienthal on saxophones, along with guitarist Paul Jackson Jr. and Larry Koonse, drummers Vinnie Colaiuta and Dave Weckl, percussionist Lenny Castro and trumpeter Randy Brecker.

I have a love of discovery in the moment, so I tend not to over research an artist before interviewing them to actually be surprised by the stories they tell and the questions they answer. I was truly surprised to find out many interesting things about Jeff’s musical journey, but to learn that hip hop stars Notorious Big and Lil’ Kim sampled Jeff’s song “Rain Dance “from his Grammy Nominated CD “Now Is The Time “which became a huge hit for Notorious Big known as “Crush on You” was a revelation. During his show he played the song and people gasped because they thought Jeff Lorber knows Notorious BIG, but in actuality it was vice-versa! Notorious BIG had the pleasure of knowing Jeff Lorber! If you would like to experience a similar Hip Hop vibe from Jeff Lorber the track “Big Brother “on his Galaxy CD moves into hip hop territory, similar to Jeff’s grooving “Rain Dance”.

Jeff and I had a conversation about musical influences and Thelonious Monk was one that he mentioned to be instrumental. I knew that Jeff danced to the beat of his own drum and created music that he wanted, but it was not until after the fact that I ran into this quote. “I say, play your own way. Don’t play what the public wants. You play what you want and let the public pick up on what you’re doing. Even if it does take them fifteen, twenty years”. Thelonious Monk~ This holds true because it has taken me 15 years to discover Jeff’s ties into the hip hop arena!

I have much more to reveal about the legendary Jeff Lorber, but you will have to wait for the upcoming release of the Inside M.E.E. Jazzy Limelight issue.

In the Jazzy Limelight: Mike Burton

THE Jazz In M.E.E. is a huge fan of the incredible sax players the world has to offer, so we follow the careers of many. There is one in particular that we have followed through numerous cities and over 1500 tweets. We have experienced his excitement and felt his frustrations in Twitter land, but one thing is a given, when he takes the stage he lights it up. Mike Burton landed in Houston, Texas January 19th, 2012 with Tyler Perry’s stage play “The Have and the Have Not’s”. Burton has played keys and sax for the Tyler Perry stage productions “Madea Goes to Jail”, “What’s Done in the Dark”, “Why Did I Get Married”, “Laugh To Keep From Crying”, “Madea’s Big Happy Family”, and “A Madea Christmas”. Burton has appeared in the Perry films “Madea’s Big Happy Family”, “I Can Do Bad All By Myself”, “The Family That Preys” and “Madea’s Family Reunion”.
